FAQ

  • How do we know when it is time to change our roof of asphalt shingles? What are the signs of aging we must recognize before it is too late?

    The corners of the legs curl upwards on the roof, which gives an effect of waves on the roof (a bit like fish tails).

    The edges of the piece of shingle curl up and down (type of ripple);

    The shingle is completely folded over the edge of eaves ("fascia") and it tends to break the wind or any attachment; moreover, there is an excessive loss of granules.

  • Does the color of the asphalt shingles (dark or light) have an effect on the longevity of the roof?

    We must admit that black is a color that attracts more heat from sunlight than white. By comparison, if the roof is well ventilated, the difference in the longevity of the roof will be minimal. Although a dark shingle attracts more sunlight, signs of aging appear more on a pale shingle, making them equivalent; the choice of color becomes a personal and aesthetic decision.

  • I have a low-pitched roof, which roofing system would be most effective?

    A roof is considered low slope when it is less than 4/12 (or 1: 3). The slope determines the rate at which water or snow escapes from the surface of the roof. A low-pitched roof eliminates water on its surface more slowly. That is why we must make repairs to it more cautiously. Laying a good Ice & Water Shield membrane sub layer (only for 3/12 slopes or if there is an attic) is suggested.

    In the case of a gravel asphalt roofing (tar and rocks, often 3/12 or less), it would be preferable and more beneficial to consider the installation of an elastomeric membrane as manufactured by Soprema.

  • Why and how to ventilate the attic (attic or air space) to prevent the formation of ice edges, having too much humidity and water infiltration?

    One should ventilate the attic or air space, because even if your home is well insulated, there is a loss heat. Under the sun, shingles itself can create heat in this area. Ventilation between the roofs allows the heat to escape before causing:

    • high humidity;
    • condensation (in winter due to the cold);
    • and edges (the heat melts the snow and water turns into frost when it reaches the edge of the roof).

    IMPORTANT: ALL VENTILATION OUTPUTS OF THE BATHROOM OR THE DYRER OF WHICH THE VENT TUBE PASSES IN THE ATTIC MUST BE CHECK TO ENSURE THAT THE HOSE IS ISOLATED AND THAT HOT AIR WILL NOT ESCAPE. (heat source caused).

    Good ventilation is created when the air inlet soffit (underside) is free of obstruction (not blocked by blown wool or mattress - should see the daylight when the edge is in the attic) and the fan on the roof (air outlet) causes a sufficient suction effect (chimney effect).
